Quick Tip – Exposing the quick launch (left hand navigation) on your Foundation 2010 web part pages

Default web part pages usually don’t have the left hand navigation menu displayed. I’m not sure the reason MS chose to specify this type of styling to these types of pages, however this has been apparent since v2007 of the product and a similar method applies to get the menu back.

Anyway, if you need to display the left hand navigation on your web part pages, you can follow the below instructions to make it visible:

There are multiple ways to do this:

  1. editing the master page,
  2. editing the pages tags directly (which is the option I am going with in this post)

You’d need to open the page up in SharePoint Designer and look for the following tags:

PlaceHolderLeftNavBar

PlaceHolderNavSpacer

Once you’ve found the tags delete the lines entirely from the page

In other words remove the line:

<asp:Content ContentPlaceHolderId=”PlaceHolderLeftNavBar” runat=”server”></asp:Content>

And remove the line:

<asp:Content ContentPlaceHolderId=”PlaceHolderNavSpacer” runat=”server”></asp:Content>

The advanced edit area should now reflect something similar tot his;

Save your page (you will then get a notice regarding the ‘unghosting’ of the pages)

Select Yes/No at this dialog box

If you select No, you will then be prompted to save the page as something other than its current name.

If you select Yes your page will be updated with these changes(Please make yourself aware of the implications of ‘unghosting’ SharePoint pages by follow the link located here)

Once its successfully been checked in you’ll then have access to the quick launch menu from your web part page.

Enjoy!
