SharePoint 2010 PDF (and other non-office) File Handling change

After recently upgrading a SharePoint 2010 environment one of our users mentioned that when they attempt to open up a PDF file (which they were able to do in 2007) they received the following screen

Which doesn’t give them the option to open the fie from the browser.

This is due o the strict browser file handling associated with SharePoint 2010 which now needs to be altered in order to have SharePoint 2010 act in the same way it did for WSS and MOSS 2007

For more details round how SharePoint handles these files the following link can be viewed: http://www.pdfsharepoint.com/sharepoint-2010-and-pdf-integration-series-part-1/

In order to change the browser file handling the below process can be followed to update the settings:

Access Central administration

From there select ‘Manage web applications’ for the application management section:

Select the web application associated with this issue:

From there select general settings:

From the ‘Browser File Handling’ selection select ‘Permissive’ click OK

The option to open up Adobe files from the browser should now be available again. Hot smile
